The transformation of the historic Teweles and Brandeis Grain Elevator has won a 2021 Progressive Architecture Award – one of six projects selected from an international pool of 122 submissions. Begun in 1954 and widely recognized as the most prestigious architectural awards program, the annual Progressive Architecture Award recognizes design innovation, excellence, and originality in the field of commissioned, unbuilt architecture. Winners are selected through blind peer review.   Architect, the Journal of the American Institute of Architects, hosts the awards program; LA DALLMAN’s grain elevator is featured on the cover of its March 2021 issue announcing the awards. DRAWING ATTENTION:

The Digital Culture of Contemporary Architectural Drawings

17 September 2019 – 11 January 2020

7 November 2019, 18:30 Roundtable Event

Roca London Gallery

(View the Roca Gallery Guide here and the Video here)

Grace La (LA DALLMAN, Harvard GSD) co-curates with Jeremy Ficca (Carnegie Mellon), and Amy Kulper (RISD), a diverse collection of more than seventy-five contemporary drawings from established and emerging practitioners around the globe. This work is stimulated by a wide range of inputs: from waste, to olfactory clouds; from political borders to airflow; from geometry to speculative forensics. The exhibition is on view from throughout the fall, with a public event hosted by the curators and invited panelists on November 7, 2019, 18:30-21:00. The opening coincides with this year’s London Design Festival and was reviewed by the Royal Institute of British Architects. (Left: CJ Lim, “Ocean Cleaning”).

The curators say “at the crossroads of architecture and information environments, resides the promise and the speculative future of the drawing. Its capacity to structure, imagine, realize, speculate, transform, politicize, and activate makes the drawing an enduring vehicle for the discipline. DRAWING ATTENTION poses the question: can drawings posit possible futures that eschew vaporization and establish architecture as an agile and critical agent in contemporary digital culture?

TALKING PRACTICE

From the world's premier design school, the Practice Platform at Harvard University Graduate School of Design presents Talking Practice, the first podcast series to feature in-depth interviews with leading designers on the ways in which architects, landscape architects, designers, and planners articulate design imagination through practice.

Hosted by Grace La, Professor of Architecture and Chair of Practice Platform, these dynamic conversations provide a rare glimpse into the work, experiences, and attitudes of design practitioners from around the world. Comprehensive, thought-provoking, and timely, Talking Practice tells the story of what designers do, why, and how they do it—exploring the key issues at stake in practice today.

You can listen to all available episodes via: iTunes, Android, Google, Stitcher, Spotify.

MOVING TOWARDS GENDER EQUITY IN ARCHITECTURE

The gender chasm in architecture persists. Students see it in their mentors, practitioners experience it in the office, and media representation of the profession follows in kind. While schools of architecture are more and more demographically gender-balanced in their student populations, faculty and the practice both remain vastly skewed, indicating that programming in schools may be leading genders into the profession inequitably or “losing” certain populations along the way, or that the bridge between academia and practice is broken. This doesn’t even include the experience of people of non-binary genders in architecture, of which documentation is almost non-existent. Without equal representation of all genders in the profession, it is virtually impossible that the practice of architecture as a whole is serving its clients and communities equitably. It takes a multitude of perspectives to serve diverse communities thoughtfully and effectively, and it is architecture’s charge to do so.

This dialogue series aims to address issues that are important to students, that they face in studio every day, and put people in conversation with them who can help them understand how to clarify and use their voices for the betterment of their experience in school, and of the profession they are bringing their voices into.

This event is made possible by the Austin Foundation for Architecture.

RETHINKING PEI: A Centenary Symposium

Roundtable: Emergence of a Modern Practice

Harvard University Graduate School of Design
Piper Auditorium, 6:30pm, October 12, 2017

Grace La presents and moderates the roundtable, “Emergence of a Modern Practice,” in which she analyzes the iconic practices of McKim Mead & White and Pei Cobb Freed to define the characteristics of modern practice. La frames the aspirations and challenges of modern practice asking how the agencies of the architect emergent in 20th century practice transformed the conditions under which architecture was produced and perceived. She also questions how the modern architect maintains authorial voice in the context of larger corporate practice. Presenting an overview of I.M. Pei’s work, La discusses the dilemma facing the post-war production of architecture, namely the establishment of an aesthetic or authorial project in the intellectual tradition that followed modernism; and yet, at the same time, subject to the efficiencies, pressures, and benefits of corporate organization. Introduction of the event by Mohsen Mostafavi (Dean, GSD); Speakers include Grace La (GSD and LA DALLMAN), Bill Pedersen (Kohn Pedersen Fox), Li Chung (Sandi) Pei (Pei Partnership Architects), Shohei Shigematsu (OMA), Yvonne Szeto (Pei Cobb Freed).
