CUDAHY DOWNTOWN PARK

This proposal transforms an existing parking lot into a vibrant, public park situated in the heart of downtown Cudahy. The design creates a new gathering location for the community, which supports civic programming and events. Activating street life, the project seeks to enhance the continued development area, creating a vibrant, outdoor living room for the City.
Examination of the existing topography reveals an existing, gentle slope of roughly 3’-0” grade change from the northwest corner (the highest point) to the southeast corner (the lowest point) of the site. This existing slope inspired the origami-like folding of the ground plane, creating a memorable form that registers pedestrian movement, encourages gathering, breaks down the scale of the site, shields the parking, directs and captures water, and incorporates planting zones that turn storm water management into a civic amenity.
The new park will be an attractive destination for the community. Featuring a splash pad, and many areas for informal relaxation, the park promotes gathering and enjoyment of the outdoors. The trees provide necessary shade and greenery for the site, while perennial patches offer a symphony of changing color throughout the year. A sloped lawn encourages visitors to sit and enjoy.
