LA DALLMAN was commissioned by the Milwaukee Montessori School to rethink the exterior and interior public spaces of the school. This proposal created a new School Green in order to beautify the entry sequence, and accommodate a safer, more organized drop-off zone. A new School Commons addition, flanking the Green, announces a bold, singular entry point to the school and initiates a string of public spaces surgically inserted into the existing school. These spaces for display, circulation and reception embrace a warm, serene aesthetic and welcome daylight into the formerly dim interior. In addition, the administrative areas and public circulation have been reconfigured in order to make supervision of entry points easier. Southwest of the school, a new Open Air Classroom buffers the Play Yard from neighboring buildings, and provides shelter for year-round outdoor play and education.
